- You need special insurance to be a delivery driver.
- Amazon provides commercial auto insurance to its delivery drivers while they’re working, and only if they keep full coverage on their personal vehicle.
- You still have to pay a deductible on claims.
AmazonFresh is a grocery delivery service that is now free for Amazon Prime members. It’s only available in select cities, so AmazonFresh reviews are limited, but demand has increased during the coronavirus pandemic.
Do I need special insurance to be a delivery driver? Yes. AmazonFresh auto insurance is commercial coverage provided by Amazon to its drivers during active delivery times as long as they keep full coverage on their personal vehicle, among other requirements. Personal auto insurance will deny a claim that happens while delivering for Amazon. Commercial insurance covers damages to your own and other vehicles if you get into an accident.
Make sure you have the right type of coverage for your needs. Enter your ZIP code to get free insurance quotes now before learning more about AmazonFresh auto insurance.
AmazonFresh Auto Insurance
Do you need special insurance coverage to use your car for work? Yes, you must have additional coverage as a delivery driver. Personal auto insurance won’t cover damages that happen while you’re on the clock.
Unlike some other food delivery services, Amazon provides commercial insurance for their drivers, but only under specific circumstances. The only exception is if you live and work in New York state. The New York DMV mandates that you have your own commercial insurance policy.
This video from Travelers Auto Insurance goes over commercial coverage and why you may need it.
Amazon provides its drivers with a commercial policy, though they must provide their own personal auto insurance that includes both comprehensive and collision coverage. AmazonFresh supplies its drivers:
- Up to $50,000 per accident for physical damage to their vehicle, contingent upon them having their own personal auto insurance, and there is a $1,000 deductible for at-fault accidents.
- Up to $1 million in auto liability coverage to cover damage to another person’s car or property if they’re found at-fault in an accident.
- Up to $1 million in uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage if another uninsured driver caused an accident. It covers damages or injuries to their vehicle, themselves, and passengers inside the vehicle.
In order for this policy to remain valid, Amazon requires drivers to keep full coverage. However, there are other requirements they must meet, or else their insurance claim may be denied.
This insurance is only active for AmazonFresh drivers while they are actively delivering something, and they must be the person driving the vehicle. If they’re renting or borrowing the vehicle, they must make sure they have the required coverage on that vehicle as well.

Why don’t delivery services cover accidents under your personal policy? Partly because delivery driving is a high-risk occupation. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that delivery drivers are the 4th most dangerous job in America. For insurers, that means there’s a higher likelihood that they’ll have to pay out a claim.
Even if AmazonFresh provides you with commercial coverage, you need to keep full coverage auto insurance for your personal vehicle to hold up your end of the bargain. The best way to save is to shop around. Enter your ZIP code to get free quotes from multiple insurers.
